Fabric Requirements

You will need a background fabric fabric for appliqué, and 1 ½” wide strips from 2 different color families. Each color family may consist of the same fabric or if you want a scrappy look, you will need 3-6 different prints from each color family.

Background
Cut one 7 ½” square

Log Cabin Strips
** All strips will be cut 1 ½” wide
Color One - Using the 1 ½” strips, cut one “log” each in the following lengths -
6 ½” , 7 ½” , 8 ½” , 9 ½” , 10 ½” , 11 ½”

Color Two - cut one “log” each in the following lengths -
7 ½” , 8 ½” , 9 ½” , 10 ½” , 11 ½” , 12 ½”

Appliqué

1. Draw an applique template onto a piece of cardboard. Cereal boxes are great for this. I chose a star for the center of the block, but you may choose any motif that you like. Just remember to allow clearance for the quarter inch seam allowance.

2. Choose your favorite appliqué technique and stitch your motif to the background square.

3. Once the applique had been completed, press the appliqué square from the wrong side to prevent distorting the motif.

4. Trim the square down to 6 ½”.

Sewing Log Strips to Center Square

Note - For basic sewing steps on how to construct a log cabin quilt block see this tutorial Beginner Log Cabin Quilt Block Construction

1. Sew the 6 ½” strip from Color one to one side of the square, using an accurate quarter inch seam allowance.

2. Press toward the log.

3. Sew the 7 ½” strip from Color one to the top of this new unit. Place the background piece on top of the new strip. The new log should be on the bottom. You will always begin stitching a new log to the last log you added.

4. Be sure to press after each new log is added.

Repeat this procedure following all around the center square. You will ALWAYS sew two strips from Color one followed by two strips from Color two.
